MEMPHIS, Tenn. — With one of the largest television audiences in the history of golf, Project X shafts delivered consistency and accuracy to win the 2010 Masters Tournament. This year’s Masters champion earned his third Green Jacket and fourth major title, playing Project X shafts in his irons. He shot a 67-71-67-67 (272), including an incredible shot on the 13th hole, and moved into fourth-place in the FedExCup standings.

The victory at Augusta National was the 10th consecutive win at The Masters for shafts designed and manufactured by True Temper, and the 13th win during the 2010 PGA TOUR season. With 100 percent of the Top 10 money positions and 79 sets in play among the entire field, True Temper brands were clearly the shafts of choice at The Masters. Additionally, True Temper brands were #2 in the overall wood shaft count this past weekend, which included the new Project X graphite shaft and the Grafalloy product line.

“The Masters is one of the game’s most revered tournaments so we are incredibly proud to have played a role in another victory at Augusta National,” says Chad Hall, director of product marketing and global tour operations for True Temper Sports. “To continue to be the preferred iron shaft among the world’s best players and now the Number Two choice for wood shafts is a huge endorsement for the designs True Temper brings to the game. Our engineers remain dedicated to providing golfers of all skill levels with shafts that provide maximum performance in accuracy, consistency and distance.”

So far this season, Project X and Rifle shafts have already collected an impressive list of wins on the tours worldwide, including the SBS Championship, Northern Trust Open, Moonah Classic, Honda Classic, World Golf Championships-CA Championship, Puerto Rico Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Masters.

The success of Project X has been punctuated by this year’s introduction of the new Project X graphite shafts which accounted for three PGA Tour victories. The straight taper and short tip section of the Project X iron shafts provides maximum energy transfer with low spin rates required for penetrating iron shots. By combing this design platform with eight premium graphite materials, the Project X wood and hybrid shafts are quickly becoming known as the lowest spinning graphite shafts available. While Project X iron shafts remain a favorite among top tour players, Project X wood shafts also are gaining popularity with the biggest names in golf trusting Project X in their drivers. The Project X graphite shafts are available in woods and hybrids.

Ernie Els is the hottest player on the PGA Tour and True Temper’s Project X shafts are right with him. Two weeks after delivering victories at the World Golf Championships – CA Championship and the Puerto Rico Open – the new Project X graphite shaft helped Els win the Arnold Palmer Invitational this past weekend in Orlando.

The Big Easy played the new Project X graphite wood shaft in his driver and 3-wood and the new Project X graphite hybrid shaft in his hybrid. Els earned $1.08 million with the win and became the first player since 2001 to win twice on the Florida Swing and emerged as seventh in the official world golf ranking.

“The Project X graphite shafts have exploded on tour since we officially launched them late last year,” says Chad Hall, director of product marketing and global tour operations for True Temper. “At Bay Hill, 21 Project X graphite pieces were in play and the event marked the fourth PGA TOUR win for Project X graphite this season. Also, True Temper continued to lead the iron shaft count this past weekend with 96 sets in play, including nine sets among the top ten finishers.”

The new Project X graphite shaft, designed and manufactured by True Temper, features a tapered design that the company says maximizes a player’s distance through the precise integration of frequency, weight distribution and launch profiles. True Temper says the new shaft combines a stable butt section with a constant taper bend profile and reinforces the tip with two additional wraps of super high modulus graphite in the lower third of the golf shaft. The result, according to True Temper, is a reduction of spin by up to 500 RPM more than other low-spin Tour model competitors. Project X graphite shafts are available in woods and hybrids.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The new Project X graphite shaft delivered distance, accuracy and the win at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship held at Doral this weekend. Designed and manufactured by True Temper, the new shaft features a unique tapered design that maximizes a player’s distance through the precise integration of frequency, weight distribution and launch profiles.

Playing the new Project X graphite shafts in his driver and in his 3-wood, the WGC-CA champion averaged more than 300 plus yards off the tee and finished in the top 20 in driving distance and accuracy for the week. The win marked his 61st title worldwide and his 17th victory on the PGA TOUR, moving him to the No. 8 ranking in the world and making him only the fifth player to win multiple times in the World Golf Championships.

“We worked closely with the tour players to develop and test the new Project X graphite shaft, so to see it win at a high profile event such as the WGC-CA Championship is incredibly exciting,” says Scott Hennessy, president and CEO of True Temper. “Professional players around the world rely on the Project X brand to deliver winning performances. MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Shafts designed and manufactured by True Temper topped the money list on three tours this weekend, scoring victories at the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic and the European and Asian Tours’ Maybank Malaysian Open.

This year’s Honda Classic champion played high-performance Project X Flighted shafts in his irons to earn a T2 ranking in Greens in Regulation (73.6%) and to shoot an impressive 65 birdies in his last 14 rounds, earning him first place in birdies. Additionally, Project X steel and graphite shafts were in the bag of the number three finisher who shot the lowest round at The Honda Classic.

Dynamic Gold shafts – which are the top-selling shafts in golf — performed no less admirably at the Malaysian Open, delivering a 14-under-par victory (69-70-67-68) for the 18-year-old pro.

“When you look at the numbers – 125 sets in play at the Honda Classic and eight sets among the top 10 finishers—there is no doubt Dynamic Gold and Project X are preferred by the best players in golf,” says Chad Hall, director of product marketing and global tour operations for True Temper Sports. “Dynamic Gold and Project X brands continue to be clear favorites among the professional players around the world because they deliver accuracy and distance more consistently than any other steel shafts in golf.”

The Number One shaft manufacturer in the world, True Temper Sports has delivered hundreds of professional tour victories around the world, and True Temper shafts, such as Dynamic Gold and Project X, continue to dominate the PGA TOUR week after week. Amateurgolf.com catches up with Don Brown, a 10-year True Temper engineering veteran out of the Memphis-based company’s San Diego office to get the straight scoop on Project X in five questions.

Q: What characteristics of the Project X steel shaft line were you trying to replicate when designing the Project X graphite line of driver, fairway wood, and hybrid shafts?
A: The Project X player profile has typically been someone looking for low spin, and a penetrating ball flight. We wanted to give them a similar feel so that, for example, it’s a fairly seamless transition when going from a long iron to the hybrid. With the driver the spin reduction is so great that we’ve seen some of our Tour players increase the loft and get an optimum launch angle and spin without any of the board-like feeling that low spin shafts can sometimes deliver.

Project X QandA

Q: What are some of the key design characteristics of Project X?
A: One of the unique things about Project X iron shafts is that each one has its own taper rate down to a 2” parallel tip. That’s a smaller parallel section than other products. Project X graphite has the same profile – we have reinforced the bottom third with 2 extra wraps of high modulus graphite, and kept the smoother taper from the butt down. This gradual taper allows for a nice even load.

Q: How does Project X graphite fit in with True Temper’s other graphite line, Grafalloy?
A: Well, first off, they are two different brands. The shafts may share a similar frequency and tip deflection, but the mid taper differentiates Project X, and it is generally a higher end product geared towards top amateurs and Tour players who are looking for low spin and a penetrating ball flight.

Q: OK, without saying anything bad about products you may supply to OEM manufacturers. How much better is an aftermarket product like Project X than the one that comes with a new club?
A: First, the OEM is going to try and provide a shaft profile that will work for most players, but it’s impossible to have something that works for everyone. Every better player should be fit, just as a Tour player would. Second, the price of an aftermarket shaft like Project X is affected by some things that are very important to a better player. We can use better materials, and a higher flag count for better performance. [Ed. note – a flag is a sheet of high modulus graphite.] Not only are the material costs higher, the cost of labor goes up too.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add Don?
A: I would only advise your players to not get fooled by the hype. Project X is already going up against some of the shaft names you hear when someone talks about a high end product, and coming up a winner. Look out for us in 2010!
